Homemade Lava lamp
Question: Can we make a lava lamp using household materials? |
Hypothesis: We think that the oil and the water added to the tube will separate from each other so as the food coloring falls through the mixture and combines with the water at the bottom. Finally we think that the alka seltzer tablet will release bubbles of carbon dioxide gas that float up to the top and takes some colored water along for the ride.

Materials
Material 1: a plastic tube
Material 2: vegetable oil
Material 3: water
Material 4: alka seltzer tablet

Procedure:
1. Use funnel to pour water into plastic bottle until water reaches one-fourth of the bottle.
2. Pour vegetable oil into the bottle until the bottle is almost full.
3. Wait until oil and water have separated.
4. Add twelve drops of food coloring into bottle.
5. Wait until food coloring falls through the oil and mixes with the water on the bottom.
6. Put alka seltzer into five or six pieces and drop a piece in and it should erupt like a legit lava lamp.
7. Put in another pice and enjoy the show!

The Science behind it
The oil and water you added to the bottle separate from each other, with oil on top because it has a lower density than water. As food coloring falls through the oil and mixes with the water at the bottom. The piece of Alka-Seltzer tablet you drop in after releases small bubbles of carbon dioxide gas that rise to the top and take some of the colored water along for the ride. The gas escapes when it reaches the top and the colored water falls back down. The reason Alka-Seltzer fizzes in such a way is because it contains citric acid and baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), the two react with water to form sodium citrate and carbon dioxide gas (those are the bubbles that carry the colored water to the top of the bottle).
Conclusions
We accept our hypothesis because we expected the alka seltzer would be the key to the entire project
