Dispersion Explosion

Question?:

What items other than pepper will disperse to the side of water in a bowl when dish soap is added to it.

Hypothesis:

Our hypothesis is that most items will not disperse because of the molecular chemistry of different materials.

Materials:

Picture

  • Dish Soap
  • Pepper and other spices/powders
  • Bowl
  • Water

Safety Procedures

Some items may burn your eye if any gets in it.

Procedure:

Detail steps so anyone can reproduce this at school or home
Use a numbered list
1. Put water in bowl.
2. But powder/spices in center of water.
3. Put a dab of dish soap on your finger.
4. Place finger in center of bowl.
5. Watch the magic.😃

Special Needs:

Our station needs to be near a water source.

Watch us in action:

The Science behind it

What is happening is dispersion.   Dispersion is when things on top of water break up and move to the sides while sticking to the water monocles in the bowl. This happens when a chemical reaction hits the water. In our experiment the chemical reaction is dish soap. The dish soap is creating a force to move all the water monocles to the side of the bowl that the water is in. The spices/powders are sticking to the water monocles and making themselves move.

Conclusions

In conclusion, only a small amount of items disperse.
