CABBAGE CHEMISTRY
RED CABBAGE INDICATOR: Indicators for acidity / alkalinity ( base )
Question: What different "test chemicals" will change the red cabbage juice? Will acids be red? Will base be green?
Hypothesis: Different items turn the juice into different colors.
Procedure:Detail steps so anyone can reproduce this at school or home
Use a numbered list: Steps: 1. Peel 6 cabbage leaves with 12 cups of water. Blend. 2. Drain the purplish cabage liquid by using a strainer. 3. Use cylinders / glasses and pour a little of the cabbage juice in each one. 4. Add a little bit of your test ingredients in each cylinder / glass to see if it changes color. (Soda, lemon, orange juice, milk, baking soda, vinegar etc.) 5. Acids will turn the purple cabbage juice red. Alkaline (base) will turn the purple cabbage juice green. Milk is a neutral. 6. Dried filter paper can be used as a test strip. Dip in cabbage juice and dry it. Then cut into test strips. The redder the strip the more acid and the greener the more base. Special Needs: Bucket for liquid waste. Paper towels for spills. |
