Sustainable Water Bottle

Question: Can you make a bio-degradable water bottle?



Hypothesis:  A bio-degradable water bottle can replace a plastic water bottle.

Our Experiment

Materials:

  • water
  • sodium alginate
  • calcium lactate
  • 3 large bowls
  • hand mixer

Safety Procedures:


Materials 2 and 3: goggles

Procedure:


  1. Fill bowls with water
  2. Measure and add sodium alginate to the water in one bowl.
  3. Measure and add calcium lactate to the other bowl of water.
  4. Let them rest.
  5. Scoop the sodium alginate mixture into the calcium lactate mixture.
  6. Let it rest.
  7. Add the combined mixture to the third bowl of water.
  8. Enjoy



Special Needs:
We will need an electrical outlet and access to a sink.

The Science Behind It:

The sodium alginate/calcium lactate mixture will create a chemical reaction that will create a "bubble" layer around the water.  The water will remain in liquid form within the bubble.  You are able to hold the bubble filled with water.




Conclusions:

In conclusion, based on our experiment it does appear possible to create a bio-degradable water bottle.  However, the bubble layer we were able to create, which surrounds the water, was not strong enough or durable enough to withstand average, every day handling.
