Salty Sea Egg

Will an egg float better in salt water or tap water?

We think that an egg will float better in salt water because the salt water is more dense than tap water.

Materials:

Picture

  • Salt
  • Water
  • 1 large container
  • 3 cups
  • Measuring cup
  • 1 Egg
  • Measuring Tablespoon
  • Gloves
  • Trash can

Safety Procedures:

DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING

1.Eggs will crack if dropped on the              ground.
2.Wear gloves just in case because raw        eggs carry germs.

Preparations:

  • Prepare at least 3 cups of tap water in the large container.
  • Label each cup with #1,2, and 3.
  • Prepare salt in a separate container.
  • Arrange the three cups on a surface.

  Procedure:

  • Add 1 cup of tap water to each cup.
  • Add 1 Tablespoon of salt to cup #2 and stir to dissolve the salt.
  • Add 2 Tablespoons of salt to cup #3 and stir to dissolve the salt
  • Gently place the egg into each cup.
  • Observe in which cup the egg will float.

The Science behind it

The egg sinks in the tap water because the egg is more dense than the tap water. Density is mass divided by volume.
The egg will be buoyant and float in the water if we increase the density of the water. Buoyancy is the force that causes objects to float.
The water's density could be increased by adding more molecules.
The molecules of salt, sodium (Na) and chloride (Cl) binds with the molecules of water, hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O) to increase the density.

Therefore, the egg will float better in the salt water.

Conclusions

This proves our hypothesis that the egg will float in the salt water.
In conclusion, our hypothesis was correct. We were correct because the egg sank in the tap water but floated in the salt water. From this experiment, we learned that we need the right amount of salt to create higher density than the egg to make it float.
