Pop Rocks Candy Experiment-Balloon Expander!!!!!!
Question:
If you add different kinds of pop rocks to sprite, which type of pop rocks will produce the most carbon-dioxide?
Hypothesis:
We think that strawberry pop rocks will produce the most carbon-dioxide because when you put strawberry pop rocks in your mouth, usually its the most affective flavor. It seems to give off more carbon-dioxide than any other flavor of pop rocks.
Procedure:Step 1: Put on your safety goggles.
Step 2: Attach the balloon securely to the funnel. Step 3: Open up the Pop Rocks bag and pour them into the funnel (each group of 2-3, will get a different flavor of Pop Rocks). Step 4: Detach balloon from funnel, making sure no Pop Rocks fall out. Step 5: Open the soda bottle. Securely attach the balloon to the sprout of the sprite bottle (we will come around and make sure the balloon is securely attached to the bottle). Step 6: One partner holds the soda bottle, and that same person will be holding the end of the balloon (containing the Pop Rocks). When it is securely attached to the bottle, the other partner will say THREE-TWO-ONE. Next at one the partner that is holding the balloon will release the Pop Rocks from the balloon into the sprite. Step 7: Stand back and watch the carbon-dioxide flow inside the balloon. Also, examine the balloons to see the results on our experiment. Special Needs: We would like to be placed by a sink or garbage because if a child doesn't follow the instructions or there is a misunderstanding, the experiment could go haywire or erupt (this could happen, we have done it before and have had this situation when we first did it). If this happens we will need to be near a sink or garbage to put it in there or pour it out. |
Watch us in action:
|
Our Results From Our Previous Experiment:
Cotton Candy- about 3 1/2 inches or 8.89 cm
Grape- about 7 inches or 17.78 cm
Cherry- about 4 inches or 10.16 cm
Strawberry- about 5 1/2 inches or 13.97 cm
The Science behind it:
The science behind our experiment is that each little pebble of Pop Rocks contains a small amount of carbon-dioxide and that also applies for the soda. When you pour the Pop Rocks into the soda, it allows some of the carbon-dioxide to flow out. Since the carbon-dioxide has no where to go in the bottle, it simply just rises into the balloon causing the balloon to expand.
Conclusion:
In conclusion the Grape Pop Rocks are the most affective when you combine them with sprite because the carbon-dioxide and the grape flavor are released faster into the soda than any other flavor. That causes the balloon to expand more rapidly than the other kind of Pop Rocks.
