Tusker Toothpaste

Question:
Will there be a chemical reaction when hydrogen peroxide, dry yeast, dish soap and warm water are mixed?

Picture
Our Experiment

Hypothesis:

We think there will be a chemical reaction because when you mix the water and dry yeast it will cause everything to foam.

Materials:

Picture

  • Material: 1 A clean bottle
  • Material 2: Half a cup of Hydrogen Peroxide Liquid
  • Material 3: 1 Tablespoon of dry yeast
  • Material 4: 3 Tablespoons of warm water
  • Material 5: Liquid dish washing soap
  • Material 6: Food coloring
  • Material 7: A small cup

Safety Procedures

WARNING:

DO NOT EAT (or use as toothpaste)

DON'T PUT IN EYES - Hydrogen Peroxide can hurt your eyes.

Procedure:

Step 1:
Mix 3 tablespoons of warm water and 1 tablespoon of dried yeast stir until yeast dissolves then set aside.
Step 2:
Pour one half a cup of hydrogen peroxide into bottle
Step 3:
Put one tablespoon of dish soap into bottle
Step 4:
Remove funnel and put in 4 drops of food coloring (color of your choice) and mix.
Step 5:
Then add step one into mixture
Step 6:
Quickly remove funnel.

Special Needs:
Warm water.

The Science behind it

When you mix all the ingredients together the mixture will foam and pour out of the bottle looking like toothpaste.  This occurs because each tiny foam bubble filled with oxygen .  The yeast acted like a helper to remove oxygen from the hydrogen peroxide. Since this happened so fast it created lots and lots of bubbles. This made the bottle get very warm. This created something called Exothermic Reaction (that means it creates lots of heat).

Conclusions

Our hypothesis was correct. We thought that there would be a chemical reaction and  it would foam up and take the appearance of foamy toothpaste.

 Comments

Hypothesis:

Materials:

Procedure:

Safety Procedure: Must be more detailed. Explain what the material/ingredients are so we know why they may be harmful.

Special Needs: You will need to provide warm water. We can try to get you close to a sink, but our sinks dont have hot water. This is a building issue.

Observation:

Science Behind it:Needs to be more specific. Why do these ingredients react a certain way? What is the reaction? Can't just say "It foams up and looks like toothpaste"

Conclusion: Needs to prove or disprove hypothesis and explain clearly what happens in the experiment.
