Alka Seltzer Lava Lamp

Question: Does temperature affect a carbon dioxide reaction?

Hypothesis:

Yes, temperature does affect a carbon dioxide reaction.
Picture
Our Experiment

Materials:

Picture

  • Empty clear plastic 1 liter or 2 liter bottles
  • Knife
  • Cutting Board
  • Timer
  • Water
  • Food Coloring
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Alka Seltzer Tablet
  • Ice
  • Hot Plate

Safety Procedures

Material 1: Wear goggles
Material 2: Adult supervision
Material 3: Wear rubber gloves when handling food coloring

How long does it take the tablet to disappear in hot water? How vigorous are the bubbles?

How long does it take the tablet to disappear in cold water?

Do you notice other differences in how the reaction happens in the colder liquid versus in the hotter liquid? Why do you think you got the results you did?

Procedure:

  1. Fill each bottle with 1-2 inches of hot or cold water, add 5 drops of food coloring and then fill it at least three quarters full with vegetable oil. Put the cap on tightly to avoid spills and leaks.
  2. Cut an Alka Seltzer tablet into quarters.
  3. Set the timer and drop a quarter of a tablet into the  hot bottle. Start timing as soon as the tablet piece reaches the water and starts reacting.
  4. Set the timer and drop a quarter of a tablet into the cold bottle. Start timing as soon as the tablet piece reaches the water and starts reacting.
  5. Think about how the two reactions looked.
