The Science behind it
Conclusions
In conclusion, our hypothesis was incorrect. The tinsel did not stick to the PVC pipe. From this experiment, we learned that every object has either a positive or negative charge. Items with opposite charges will attract to each other and those with same charges will repel away from each other.
When you rub the pipe on your hair it has a negative charge. When the tinsel is first dropped, it has a positive charge. That is why they attract at first. Then, when they touch, the tinsel picks up the negative charge and it repels from the negatively charged PVC pipe. The tinsel stays floating in the air because it keeps its negative charge and continues repelling from the PVC pipe.
When the tinsel comes in contact with another object, it sticks to that object. It does this because all things have a charge – positive or negative. SO, the object must have a positive charge since the tinsel is negatively charged and they stick to each other.
