Fun with Dry Ice: Boo Bubbles
Which material is best to play with Boo Bubbles?
Bare hands, snow gloves, polyethylene gloves, wool gloves, fleece gloves, cotton gloves, latex gloves or leather gloves.
Hypothesis:
We predict that bare hands will not be good for holding Boo Bubbles and that cotton gloves will be the best.
The Science behind it
What is dry ice? Dry ice is Carbon dioxide, or for short CO2, in solid form. It is -110 degrees Fahrenheit. Because it is so cold, it is used to keep food cold during power outages. Ice cream trucks use dry ice. Dry ice density is between 1.2 and 1.6 kg/dm3 which means it can't float in water.
What is a Boo Bubble? When we add the dry ice to warm water, we see steam. This shows the carbon dioxide is turning from a solid to a gas. This is called sublimination. When we covered the container and added soap to the nozzle, the gas went through the tube and got trapped inside the soap. This makes the Boo Bubble. Carbon dioxide gas is inside the soap bubble.
What makes the Boo Bubble pop? The Boo Bubble pops because the surface tension is broken. If the carbon dioxide is able to diffuse or spread across the bubble surface, the bubble will last longer. If the bubble wall gets weak, it leaks some of the carbon dioxide gas. The pressure inside the bubble is reduced and the bubble pops.
Conclusions
We accept our hypothesis. Bare hands were not good three out of four times, the Boo Bubble burst right away, but one time it lasted 31 seconds. Boo Bubbles lasted the longest with cotton gloves. They lasted an average of 46.8 seconds with cotton gloves. The second best were latex gloves with the stunning average of 31.5 seconds. What is interesting is that the latex gloves had the longest life of all of the trials. One latex trial was 63.6 seconds and another was 62.2 secconds, but then two trials burst right away. Fleece gloves had an average of 26.5 seconds and wool gloves had an average of 22.8 seconds. The worst gloves to wear with Boo Bubbles are snow gloves and leather gloves with an average of 0 seconds. Polyethylene gloves were not very good either, they only lasted an average of 1.1 seconds.
The Boo bubble pops when you touch it with your bare hands because the bubble hates oil and dirt and your hands are full of oil and dirt so the boo bubble pops. However if you wear gloves, the soap is not able to touch the oils and therefore you can play with the bubble without it popping.
